Indocalamus tessellatus

Indocalamus tessellatus
Indocalamus tessellatus - Author's garden, Houston, Texas, Summer 2007

A beautiful low growing bamboo (3-5 feet tall) that likes shade and lots of moisture. The leaves are among the largest of all in the bamboo family. During dry spells, some leaves may suddenly die back. Also this bamboo IS an aggressive runner, popping up 6-10 feet away. May do well in large containers, but I would not recommended this plant for small garden landscapes.
