Clumping Tropical Bamboo

Dendrocalamus brandisii
Giant Bamboo

Dendrocalamus brandisii is has thick walled culms. It is a massive tall tropical bamboo with large leaves. New culms are covered with a layer of soft brown hair giving this bamboo one of it's common names - Teddy Bear Bamboo.

I planted this specimen in early 2005. It has withstood lows here in Houston of 27 degrees with major leaf drop but made a quick recovery with warm weather. My clump has added 4 new culms this year, the tallest of which is over 30 feet tall in September 2007.

This is one of my favorite bamboo but not recommended for use in regular suburban landscapes because of it's tenderness to freezing weather and because of its massive size. For the more adventurous gardener with limited frost and freezing weather, I highly recommend this bamboo.

100' tall, 8" dia culms, good to 32 deg F
